Black walnuts and butternuts: a practical field guide

Black walnut and butternut trees belong to the same walnut family, so they can look remarkably similar at first glance. Both produce compound leaves, aromatic foliage, hard-shelled nuts, and valuable food for wildlife. They also grow in many of the same eastern forests, making a careful identification worthwhile.

Learning to distinguish these native hardwoods supports more than a satisfying nature observation. Accurate tree identification helps volunteers collect the right seeds for restoration projects, recognize healthy parent trees, and understand how forests protect streams and improve water quality throughout the Potomac River watershed.

The most dependable approach combines several clues. Examine the tree’s habitat, bark, twigs, leaf structure, fruit, and timing rather than relying on a single characteristic. A leaf may be damaged, a nut may be immature, or bark may vary with age, but several matching features usually provide a confident answer.

Start with the tree’s overall character

Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is often a large, impressive forest tree. Mature specimens may reach 70 to 90 feet, with a broad crown and a strong, straight trunk. They commonly grow in fertile bottomlands, floodplains, stream terraces, and moist woods where soil is deep and nutrient-rich. Their open canopy can create a distinctive silhouette in fields and woodland edges.

Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is generally smaller and less massive, although it can still become a substantial tree. Its crown is often more irregular and spreading, and its trunk may divide earlier than a black walnut’s. Butternuts favor well-drained soils on slopes, upland ravines, rocky woods, and streamside locations that are moist without remaining saturated.

Habitat is a useful first filter, not a final verdict. Black walnuts can grow on uplands when conditions are favorable, while butternuts may occur in low-lying areas. Look at the surrounding trees and soil, then confirm the identification with leaves, bark, or fruit.

Read bark, twigs, and growth habit

The bark of a mature black walnut is usually dark gray to nearly black. Deep, narrow furrows separate rounded or interlacing ridges, creating a rugged pattern that becomes more pronounced with age. From a distance, the dark bark and heavy trunk can make black walnut stand out among lighter-barked hardwoods.

Butternut bark is commonly pale gray, gray-brown, or silver-gray. Its ridges are broad and flattened, with shallower furrows than those of a mature black walnut. Older bark may become more deeply fissured, so color and texture should be considered together. Young butternut trunks can be especially confusing because their smooth bark lacks the mature pattern used for identification.

Twigs offer additional clues during the dormant season. Black walnut twigs are stout and may show distinctive chambered pith when cut, though cutting live branches is unnecessary and should be avoided. Their leaf scars are typically large and somewhat heart-shaped. Butternut twigs are often thicker, fuzzy, and more noticeably hairy, with a large leaf scar that can resemble a small shield. The terminal buds of butternut are also commonly larger and more elongated.

Use leaves as your strongest clue

A walnut leaf is divided into many smaller leaflets arranged along a central stalk. Black walnut usually has 15 to 23 leaflets, though the number varies. The leaflets are lance-shaped, finely toothed, and often slightly curved. The end leaflet is frequently missing or greatly reduced, giving the leaf a subtly uneven finish.

Butternut leaves generally have fewer leaflets, often 11 to 17. The leaflets are longer, more oval or oblong, and noticeably soft or hairy, especially on the underside. A well-developed terminal leaflet is a valuable clue: unlike black walnut, butternut commonly ends in a clear, stalked leaflet. The underside may appear paler because of its fine hairs.

When identifying foliage, inspect a complete leaf rather than one isolated leaflet. Black walnut leaves can have a small terminal leaflet, and butternut leaves may lose leaflets through insect damage or weather. Note the overall length, leaflet count, texture, arrangement, and scent. Crushing a fallen leaflet gently can release the characteristic spicy or citrus-like aroma shared by both species, so fragrance alone cannot separate them.

Compare nuts, husks, and seasonal timing

Fruit is often the clearest way to separate the species in late summer and autumn. Black walnut fruit is usually round, with a thick green husk that turns yellow-green, brown, or nearly black as it matures. The husk surface is generally smooth or only lightly textured, and the fruit often occurs singly or in small groups. The husk contains dark compounds that can stain hands, clothing, and pavement.

Butternut fruit is more elongated, oval, or egg-shaped. Its green husk may have a slightly fuzzy or sticky surface, and the nuts commonly hang in clusters of several fruits. Inside, the shell is deeply ridged and shaped more like a thick, rough oval than the rounded shell of a black walnut. The edible kernel is also more elongated and usually easier to recognize once the husk has been removed.

Unripe fruit can make the distinction harder because both species have green husks. Look at the shape and cluster pattern rather than color alone. Black walnut husks tend to be round and individual; butternut fruits are typically longer and more visibly grouped.

Timing adds context. Leaves emerge in spring and turn yellow in autumn before dropping. Nuts develop through the growing season and may fall while the leaves are still present or shortly afterward. Fallen husks can darken and deteriorate, so pair fruit evidence with a nearby leaf, twig, or bark examination whenever possible.

No single row should decide the identification. For example, a young black walnut may not yet show deeply furrowed bark, and a butternut growing in shade may have a less distinctive crown. Two or three independent clues pointing in the same direction provide much stronger evidence.

Make a careful field identification

A simple field routine prevents rushed decisions. Begin several feet away and record the tree’s setting, approximate size, crown shape, and bark color. Then inspect a fallen leaf or a naturally shed twig. Count the leaflets, check whether a terminal leaflet is present, and feel for the soft hairs associated with butternut foliage.

If nuts are available, observe their shape before touching them. Wear gloves when handling walnut husks because the staining material can persist on skin and fabric. Do not taste nuts found in the wild, especially when you cannot confirm the species, freshness, or exposure to pollutants. Leave enough fruit for squirrels, birds, and other wildlife.

Black walnuts and butternuts are part of the native forest community, providing food and shelter for wildlife while contributing leaf litter and woody structure to the ecosystem. Their root systems help hold soil in place, and trees growing near streams can reduce erosion and shade waterways.
